Handpuffs

Riley is a typical 3 year old boy, anytime he sees or hears anything involving construction and/or rescue guys(police/ambulance/fire men), it is guaranteed to keep his mind busy for at least the following 7 days.

About a week ago, here's our conversation:

Ri: Daddy, what are handpuffs?
D: Um buddy, what do you mean?
Ri: You know, handpuffs!
D: I'm not sure, buddy, tell me about them.
Ri: HANDPUFFS......screaming......

Note: We were on the way home from having just purchased a new computer, my mind was off in lala land thinking of all the neat things I could do on our blog with new said computer. Obviously, Ri didn't like me leading him on with my bantered conversation.

D: Ok, buddy, let's figure this out, tell me about these handpuffs
Ri: You know like that bad guy mommy saw get taken down by the policeman
NOTE: Thinking in my mind: where has your mommy been taking you?
Ri: Right over there daddy, the policeman tackled a bad guy and put on handpuffs.
D: Oh (lightbulb clicking on), Handcuffs! Oh ya, those are so bad guys can't get away from the policeman.
Ri: Ya, Handpuffs.......as he settled back down in his chair, subtly amused with himself over the fact he was able to explain to me the word "Handpuffs".

I guess Jill and Riley saw a teenager get arrested a few days earlier while driving down the street, and Jill neglected to tell me about all the excitement. So now every time we drive by which is a daily occurrence we get asked......"Daddy, what are handpuffs"....tis the life of a 3 year old!

An Update!

Yes, I've finally gotten time to catch up with our good 'ole blog.

Since last visit, some things have changed, and some things....not so much.

First, Riley started pre-school. He really likes his teacher Pastor Lisa and so far they've learned the letters A and B.
Second, we've done some painting in the new house, got a new roof, and made time to hang a few pictures. Not as many as Jill would like to see up, but I"m slowly getting things done.

The not so much part, is the sleep. Jack still doesn't like to let us sleep much more than 2 hours or so. We rotate throughout the night, so we each get a decent stretch, but this boy is learning our buttons already! He's a cute little guy. Grampy got him to laugh for the first time on September 1st. He still adores his big brother, although Ri does like to get right up in his face and yell "hey bro!"

Jack's Baptism is tomorrow followed by a family feast at our house. Until then, here's a slideshow of pics up until about 1 week ago.

Nap Time

Jack and I enjoyed a little quiet time together. Mama was catching up on some rest and Bro Bro was doing the same.

Happy 4th of July

A little story, then on to the photo link of Jack's birthday.

Riley and I went to the local Lenexa 4th of July parade today. Our first stop was at Starbucks so daddy could nourish his craving. While standing at the counter Riley says to me, "Daddy, you should have gotten me a watch". The gentleman behind me says, wow, I didn't know 3 year olds can tell time. Riley, acknowledging that he's a 3 year old with superior powers says, "well, I'm a big brother now and big brothers can have watches that tell time".

Continue on to the parade. Grammy was with us and she let Riley wear her jogging watch. As we're walking toward the parade I see Riley just staring at the watch. He probably looked at if for 30-40 yards, completely losing sight of where or what he was doing. I'm sure he's thinking to himself, I'm 3, I'm a big brother, how hard can this time telling thing be.

Well about 50 yards into our walk he tells me, "Daddy, this watch stinks" Now, if you know my son, he could be going 2 directions with this. The literal meaning of the watch doesn't smell good, or the fact that he's mad at it.

Conversation continues......

D: Why Ri?
R: It doesn't know how to tell time
D: Well what do the numbers say?
R: That doesn't matter daddy. (Blatantly trying to change the subject of numbers, as to avoid the "Riley, what number is this" question)
D: Ri, when you look at watches and the numbers are on there, you read them and that's what time it is.
R: That's silly daddy, watches are supposed to tell us what time it is
D: Ya, buddy they are. Those darn Stinky watches!
